Toyota Fortuner 2016 model is based on ESTEC GD Engine 2800 cc as the top end Toyota Hilux Revo. As you will see it is a completely new look and it is also a completely new vehicle with all the comforts of a genuine Sport Utility Vehicle. Toyota now wants Fortuner to be known as Prado’s cousin and not as a Hilux sibling.

The 2016 Toyota Fortuner is underpinned by an updated IMV platform that will comply with the Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA). Akin to the current model, the next-generation Fortuner will boast of a ladder frame chassis, which should mean that the ruggedness  would remain unaffected.

All variants are fitted with trailer sway control, which is designed to assist if a towed vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sharp turns of the steering wheel. Maximum braked towing capacity will be three tonnes for the manual and 2.8 tonnes for the auto^*.

A part-time 4×4 during day-to-day driving, owners can turn a dial to access Fortuner’s impressive four-wheel-drive ability in high or low range.

More Horsepower and performance

2500 cc 144 hp Toyota Fortuner has now been replaced with 2500 cc 150 hp 2016 Fortuner while 3000 cc 171 hp is now replaced with 2800 cc 177 hp. 2700 cc engine is retained but tweaked from 160hp to 166hp. Not an earth shattering boost in performance but still impressive in diesel given the lower cc engines.

Automatic transmission is now 6 speed and is selectronic so you get the convenience of auto and power of manual at your fingertips. 4WD technology has now also been improved.

The newly developed six-speed automatic transmissions has more steps and optimised gear ratios to maximise engine performance. As with new Hilux, stick-shift manual transmission Fortuners are equipped with the Intelligent Manual Transmission system (i-MT) supporting smooth shifting with rev matching technology.

The vehicle’s off-road prowess is enhanced by a rear differential lock with the componentry placed within the differential housing for greater off-road protection.

Semi-independent coil spring set-up has been replaced by a more sophisticated multi-link layout for better balance between ride and handling.

On the ride and handling front, an all-new frame bolstered by cross members, side rails and suspension towers that have all been strengthened, enhancing the torsional and bending rigidity of the frame. This not only improves durability but also drive quality and safety. The suspension uses a double wishbone at the front and a four-link suspension at the rear combination that has been redesigned for optimised comfort. An additional rear stabiliser has been installed to aid on-the-road smoothness and stability.

GD Engines come with ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) technology and is a downsized turbocharged direct injection engine with superior thermal efficient combustion. This engine features a combination of a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold and a turbocharger, and achieves high-speed combustion using a fan spray direct and port injection system and a high in-cylinder tumble ratio. The GD engine is capable of both seamless and invigorating acceleration while also ensuring superior thermal efficiency. We are therefore expecting superior performance with minimal fuel use.

As indicated above, GD engines use commonrail fuel injection technology operating at ultra high pressures of up to 135 mpa (1350 bar or about 19,580 psi) which is about 8 times more than the pressure of conventional fuel injection systems within a “common rail” that feeds the injectors on all four cylinders. This is combined with a 32-bit ECU standard with Toyota Hilux Revo and Toyota Fortuner which controls fuel quantity, valve-timing, and boost pressure at different engine parameters resulting in best fuel economy and also full utilization of power during acceleration. Pilot injection is also utilized by the common rail fuel system to smooth engine operation. Small amounts of fuel are introduced into the combustion chamber prior to the main injection event, reducing lag time and promoting more continuous and complete combustion. Exterior and interior engine noise is also reduced.

Studies show that nearly half of all drivers do not step on the brake quickly and strongly enough to stop the vehicle in case of an emergency.

When Brake Assist detects an attempted panic stop, it supports drivers by strengthening the power.

Brake Assist will detect attempted panic braking based on the force that is applied to the brake pedal and how fast the driver is stepping on the pedal. When the system recognizes sudden braking, it will add additional pressure to the brake.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

Also, when the vehicle begins to spin from abrupt steering handling (over-steering), the vehicle will take control to steer toward the outer curve.
